Companions, Signs of Spring and a New Book
Writing companions and bright blooms plus the new book
Hello there,
“April is the cruelest month, breeding lilacs out of the dead land, mixing memory and desire, stirring dull roots with spring rain.”
― T.S. Eliot, The Waste Land
I hope you’re enjoying the Easter weekend if that’s a thing for you. Clouds and rain have swooped in to make sure all of us here in the UK are sufficiently damp. Are we downhearted? No. Are we grumbling about the weather? Obviously.
I realise, by the way, that I posted a newsletter last week, but there were some questions about the availability of the new book, A Shamefaced Murder, so I wanted to let you know the score.
But first, some photos…
Featured Photos
Three ways to enjoy the photos: a collage in the email, separate images in the substack app, an interactive gallery in the online post.

Writing companions: a blue tit tapping at my window to say, ‘Keep typing.‘ Also, a welcome return for the hedgehog, who seemed happy for me to stand close and take a photo. I realise she’s been eating the dried mealworms I put out for the birds - the birds spill and the hedgehog cleans up.
Also, a magnolia, a flowering currant, rosemary and forget-me-nots in the garden. Bluebells in the wild.
More photos soon. Until then, happy reading.

Thank you for bearing with me during the making of the book and the subsequent publishing steps. It will be nice when the book finally gets into the hands of the people who’ve been waiting. I sincerely hope you feel it was worth the wait.
I’ll get back to work, still concentrating on the new version of A Study in Stone, while the rain and wind beat against the window.
If you have questions, there’s a ‘Leave a Comment‘ button below, and that’s a great way to get in touch.
All the best.
Happy reading and take care,
Mikey

Just purchased, downloaded and can’t wait to read it 😀I always look forward to your books and enjoy the detailed way in which you set the scene as I can almost feel like I’ve been to Devon
Hello Mikey,
I have already purchased (from your website - all downloaded easily) and read the new book. I enjoyed it very much.
Personally, I would have liked Alan to take a bigger part in the story.
I'm sorry to say that Dan is getting on my nerves a bit!!
The characters are very real, as is the dialogue. Plot is intriguing.
Thank you for writing the book.
I'll post a review, probably on Good Reads.
