Now that things are getting easier, bit by bit, Mrs C and I ventured out for the evening.
Driving over to Teignmouth for fish and chips followed by a walk along the sea front, felt like quite an adventure.
Like a lot of seaside towns in the UK, Teignmouth is partly splendid and partly a little down-at-the-heel. On a sunny day, the brightly painted houses and eclectic mixture of little shops combine to create a jaunty atmosphere. But on a dark day in winter, you tend to notice the cracks in the walls of that fine old building, or the fact that yet another shop has closed its doors for good.
On this evening we almost had the seafront to ourselves. We had the great good sense to go out while the England team were playing in the European football tournament, and with large crowds not allowed in the pubs, it seemed that most people had stayed at home to watch the match.
This suited me very well, and we had a relaxed evening, tucking into fish and chips at a little place that sits below a fine old church (see photo below), followed by a drink in the bar of the relatively new theatre. The theatre is a modern building, all glass and boxy angles, but from inside it is spacious, airy and affords a view of the sea. So we sat back in comfort, watching the waves, while a little light jazz tinkled over the speakers. I tested a beer that I thought Dan might order, purely for research purposes you understand, and it wasn’t bad at all. I kept thinking that the town would be a great backdrop for a story, but then I think that pretty much wherever I go.
Hopefully, we’ll visit the theatre again when shows are staged and films are screened. That day, I’m pleased to say, is not too far away.
I hope you enjoy the photos.
