In the next Devonshire Mystery, Dan and Alan will meet someone in this unusual location.
In the centre of Exeter, these are the ruins of St Catherine’s Almshouses and Chapel.
Tucked away in the city centre, and perhaps a bit overshadowed by the glories of the nearby cathedral, it seemed like a great place for characters to meet.
Crumbling walls of red stone.
The glass shapes show where the doors stood. Part of a work of art, they contain fragments of artefacts.
An old fireplace.
You can see the chapel tower, with a modern building in the background.
These slabs are carved with entries from the records of the almshouses.
A carved entry from the records at the almshouses.
The chapel tower, complete with bell.
A glimpse of the cathedral.
A gull perching on the ruins.

Can’s wait for the next book!
Thanks, that’s good to hear. Sorry to keep you waiting.
Interesting photos, thanks for sharing these!
You’re very welcome. I’m glad you like them.
It’s nice to see that the city cherishes these ruins and that you recognize the value of incorporating the site in your story. Good choice.
Thanks. Most people seem to pass these ruins by, but they are fascinating.
It may be that passersby are taking the ruins for granted but they may also be at peace in celebrating this relic of their heritage.
